X11 and OpenOSX, Oh Yah!
True native X-window environment with full Quartz integration...at
last. Thanks Apple!
We
are excited to announce our entire product line that utilizes XFree,
the X11 window environment, can immediately use Apple's version
of X11.
That
means that your existing version of Grass
GIS, The Gimp, OpenOSX
Office, and OpenOSX FilmGimp
will all work as is with Apple's Cocoa-based X11. |

The
Gimp,
AbiWord, Gnumeric
and Grass GIS all running together
in Apple's new X11! |
| This
is exciting news, because Apple's X11
launches much faster; nearly instantly when compared with OroborOSX
and XDarwin, and Apple has enabled native hardware support using
the Quartz graphics system for dramatic speed improvements and true
integration between the X11 and Mac OS X environments. X11
also supports 3-button mice and mouse 3-button emulation.
Warning:
Apple's X11 is currently
Public Beta (pre-release) software, and although our experience
has been pleasant with no major issues, please be cautious with
Apple's X11 and treat it as Beta software. Generally, beta software
should not be relied upon in mission-critical applications. If you
do decide to use it, always make adequate archives of your data
before installing and using it.
So if you do decide that you want to go ahead and try X11
out, just install Apple's X11
package either before or after you have installed your OpenOSX package(s).
If you install an OpenOSX package after you have installed Apple's
X11 package, you
do not need to do anything special, you are all set! Our package
will not overwrite an existing version of X-Windows.
Apple's package will overwrite our installation of XFree with theirs.
If you try X11 out
and want to go back to ours, run the "Remove X-Windows"
package included with your OpenOSX CD, and then install your OpenOSX
package again.
We
have prepared a package that will create OpenOSX application launch
items for Apple's X11 application. Download it for free from here.
