Run Windows on Mac

Windows 7 is supported, see it running.

WinTel 3.0 now offers Virtualization on Intel Macs. Virtualization allows Windows to run at practically native speeds within Mac OS X. By native, we mean the speed that Windows would run if you booted into Windows on the same machine.

Microsoft® Windows XP is a recommended guest operating system*

We also now include a full version of Ubuntu Linux pre-installed on a ready-to-use WinTel disk image. Experience the freedom of running one of the most popular versions of Linux within Mac OS X. You get the best of both worlds!

WinTel™ allows host operating systems (and applications) such as Microsoft® Windows to run in a protected, virtual environment in a window on Mac OS X. Now for the first time, with WinTel 3.0 the instructions may be virtualized on Intel Macs, drastically increasing performance up to several thousand percents faster.

WinTel is our popular Cocoa graphical user interface used to control the included powerful underlying open-source “Qemu” x86 virtualization/emulation software. We now include both PowerPC and Intel (G4, G5, and Intel) optimized binaries.

We have successfully tested this version of WinTel running Microsoft® Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows XP Professional/Home, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Ubuntu™ Linux 9.04, along with the included ten ready-to-use operating systems (see below).

WinTel now features zero-configuration network support for Windows XP and the included Ubuntu and offers limited support for the following: “Sound Blaster” compatible card, and 32-bit color SVGA Video. Your Mac OS X home folder is available in a Windows guest via FTP or Samba and files may also be readily transferred between the guest and host operating systems.

CD-ROM drive and floppy disk support may be achieved by creating a disk image with Apple’s Disk Utility software, or the included WinTel feature. The Finder may be used to transfer data between the guest operating system and the host Mac OS X operating system.

We have developed a tutorial for installing Windows XP at: WinTel XP Tutorial, we have a tutorial for installing Windows 98 at WinTel 98 Tutorial and a tutorial for installing Windows 95 at WinTel 95 Tutorial. Note that for the use of XP we recommend an Intel-based Mac or a fast G5. Our guest Windows operating system of choice is Windows XP on the Intel Macintoshes and Windows 98 on PPC mainly due to the substantially longer installation and boot times required for XP compared to 98.

Our WinTel product includes the following separate disk images with 10 different popular open-source x86 operating systems pre-installed:

Windows XP FreeBSD Ubuntu Linux
GNU Hurd MuLinux
FreeDos PicoBSD
Minix NetBSD
Debian™ Linux DLX Linux
Our exclusive “Universal-Binary” is fully-compatible and optimized for Intel Macs, PowerMac G5s, and PowerMac G4s.

Mac OS X is a true chameleon of operating systems, users may now run a long list of operating systems within it: Mac OS 9, Windows 95/98/2K/NT, DOS, Linux, Unix, BSD, etc. software, seamlessly and on your Mac today.

Just drag WinTel to the location of your choice to start enjoying OpenOSX WinTel 3.0 with fully with ready-to-use disk images of various x86 operating systems or install your own guest operating system of choice. Note that commercial operating systems such as Windows® are not included which you must provide your own license to use.

We recommend a G5 or better, Intel Macs are ideal. You may be able to play Windows games (not full screen immersive 3D games) on the Intel Macintoshes. CPU intensive games/software are not recommended for non-Intel Macs, please see our WinTel FAQ.
